Hi, my name is Mark Perham, Turf Manager for Eden Park, I have been in the Turf industry for 20 years, 10 of which were in the golf sector and 6 years as Turf Manager at Carisbrook prior to my current position which I have held for 4 years.

To all those home owners out there that take some pride in their lawns we will be giving regular tips on improving your lawns including grass types, fertilising, watering, sourcing products and general ways to help make your lawn something to be proud of.

Regular tips

June 2007 - Moss

Shaded and wet lawn areas are often ideal conditions for moss growth. Moss doesn't kill lawns however it does fill gaps and areas of thinning grass. Fertility of soils, drainage and compaction of soils all contribute to moss growth however these can be the hardest factors to alter.

If possible, trees causing shading should be pruned to allow more light and improve conditions. After correcting conditions, moss can be eradicated by mechanical methods including raking the moss out and reseeding or spraying algaecides (Mostox) available from PGG Wrightson Turf. Please read the label for directions.

26 February 2007

Currently ET (Evaporation Transportation) rates are as high as 10mm per day, watering during the evening and early morning will reduce water loss to evaporation. The use of wetting agents can improve water penetration and prevent plant stress. Wetting agents can be purchased from PGG Wrightson.

9 November 2006

Now is a good time to sow new grass, warmer temperatures and regular rainfall make good conditions for germinating grass. When choosing a grass seed remember to look at the quality before price. Cheaper seed will probably have low germination rates and high weed content.
