Our Park

Every year, Eden Park hosts over half a million local and international sports fans and patrons at matches and functions.

For more than one hundred years Eden Park has been the home of Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby. It’s a history full of rich sporting moments.

With a seating capacity just under 50,000 seats, Eden Park creates an unmatched atmosphere to experience LIVE sport in New Zealand.

The Park is located in the heart of Auckland, and is well served by arterial roads, buses and trains. It is centrally located in the vibrant suburb of Kingsland less than 3km from the CBD.

“Eden Park is for all of Auckland and New Zealand not solely for supporters of rugby and cricket.”

Auckland’s unprecedented growth in recent years demonstrates the city’s global appeal and diverse multicultural communities. Auckland is the largest Polynesian city in the world and along with its European, Asian and other diverse ethnic communities, there is now interest in all sporting codes, as well as recreational, musical, and cultural events.

Eden Park has a proven track record of delivering successful events since 1903, including the 1950 Empire Games, World Masters Game Opening Ceremony 2017, RWC1987 and RWC2011, CWC1992 and CWC2015, Lions Series, annual Bledisloe Cup fixtures and the list goes on.

Economic Impact

According to a report released by Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) on behalf of Auckland Council, the DHL New Zealand Lions Series 2017 matches held at Eden Park attracted thousands of international visitors, generated millions of dollars of new money and supported hundreds of jobs.

Eden Park has recently appointed several local suppliers and contractors within the stadium’s supply chain to deliver an economic boost to a number of businesses in the area. With Kingsland and Dominion Road developing as thriving dining and retail precincts, they provide the perfect pre-and-post event destinations for locals and international visitors.

Over 100 Years of History

In 1902, Harry Ryan, a young, passionate cricketer, stood on Kingsland Road and looked out over a rough paddock.

It was strewn with stones, rocky outcrops and cowpats with a low-lying swamp at the bottom. He saw a cricket ground. This was to become Eden Park. Ryan and friends initially leased the land and the Eden Cricket Club was formed.

In 1910 the Park became the home of Auckland Cricket and then Auckland Rugby Union leased the Park in 1914, officially making Eden Park its home in 1925.

A Trust was set up in 1926 providing a group of Trustees to manage Eden Park primarily for the benefit of Auckland Cricket and Auckland Rugby.

The Eden Park Trust manages the Park today.

Women in Sport

Eden Park is set to host three World Cup events in the next three years, Rugby World Cup 2021, the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
